Can I Pick 'Em Or What?

Back in the fall of 2000, I was a post-doc working at Yale, working on a fairly major paper (at least from the my persepctive), and starting to apply for academic jobs at small liberal arts colleges. Kate and I also got engaged that September, so we started doing a bit of wedding planning.

We decided that the most sensible thing to do would be to set the date a year and a half in the future, for just after her graduation from law school. At the time, I didn't have any job offers yet (when I interviewed for my current job, I left Schenectady the next day, and drove to Boston for our engagement party), but I said "That should be fine-- every college in America is done by June 1."

Which is how I ended up being scheduled to teach freshman mechanics two days after our wedding-- I got hired by one of the few liberal arts schools in the nation that's still on a trimester system. And that's why I'm going to be spending our fourth anniversary grading student papers-- tomorrow is the last day of classes.

It was a little bit of a rough start-- I was supposed to teach that Monday (but I got someone else to cover the class for me), Kate did start Bar Review class that Monday, and on Thursday we got notice that my landlord wouldn't renew the lease in August (which wrecked our honeymoon plans). The whole marriage thing has worked out pretty well since, though, so I think we'll keep it up for at least a little while longer...

Yesterday's write-up of my Science paper ended with a vague promise to deal some inside information about the experiment. So, here are some anecdotes that you would need to have been at Yale in 1999-2000 to pick up. We'll stick with the Q&A format for this, because why not? Why don't we start…
I've found myself in the weird position of giving career advice twice in the last week and a half. Once was to a former student, which I sort of understand, while the second time was a grad student in my former research group, who I've never met. I still don't really feel qualified to offer useful…
Classes for the Fall term start next week, which means that things are starting to gear up on campus. We've been sent our class rosters, and lists of new freshman advisees, and have started to have meetings about team-taught courses and department policies and the like. And, of course, the new…
Over at Terra Sigillata, Abel has a post on the limiting of job searches that is an excellent example of the problems with the academic mind-set: The short summary: postdocs and other academic job candidates are disqualifying themselves from even applying for certain positions because: 1. they don'…

Congratulations. We scheduled our wedding for the middle of August, and both of our kids were born at the end of May, which has avoided the conflicts with academic calendars. However, we did end up moving four years in a row right before our wedding anniversary, so finding a decent restaurant and babysitter was a challenge.

Happy Anniversary!

May there be many more.

Many congratulations.
I'll probably always remember you guys' wedding, not only because I was there, but also because I followed your excellent example exactly a year later....
