NFL Week 2

Three comments on the second week of the NFL season:

1) Given that Brett Favre famously lay down to give Michael Strahan the single-season sack record, it seems only fitting that the Giants should roll over to give him the NFL wins record for a QB. If the clock hadn't run out, he probably could've broken the total touchdown record, too-- he only needs three to pass Marino, and God knows, the Giants weren't going to stop him from throwing a TD pass every time the Packers got the ball.

2) I feel for Eli Manning, and not just because I re-aggravated a shoulder separation on Friday (and then played one more basketball game, because I'm a great big idiot). He's finally playing really well, the offense has really been clicking, and the defense has totally collapsed. The Giants offense needs to score a touchdown on every possession to have a chance of winning, because the defense can't stop anybody.

Manning's best bet would probably be to play up his injury, take the rest of the season off, and come back next year with a new coach (because Tom Coughlin is done, done, done). It doesn't look like he's going to do that, though, and Archie Manning must be just about paralyzed with deja vu.

3) Guess they didn't need the videotape that badly, did they?

I'm going to be in the Boston area this weekend, visiting Kate's family, so I will end up watching Saturday night's Giants-Patriots game with my Patriot-fan in-laws. In case you didn't know, New England is currently 15-0, and if they win this game they have the chance to be the first team to ever…
A handful of sports items of interest to me: 1) My Giants defied expectations, and pulled out a 21-16 win over the Bears on two late touchdown drives, after sucking for most of the game. Well, OK, the defense was good throughout, though they were aided by the Bears not having a quarterback better…
The NFL season starts in earnest today, and it's about damn time. Granted, the early afternoon offerings on our local cable system-- Jets/Titans and Eagles/Texans-- probably don't really qualify as "football," and the late afternoon Cowboys/Jaguars game is interesting only insofar as either Terrell…
As an avowed Giants fan, I suppose I really ought to say something about the epic meltdown they suffered in the past week, ideally before today's game with the Cowboys. The trouble is, last week was so horrendous that it's hard to say anything coherent... I ought to say something, though, so I'll…

Also, let me nominate this for the Best Interview Quote of the season:

"They just jumped on us like a spider monkey," San Diego fullback Lorenzo Neal said.

That's going to be hard to top.

Break up the Browns!!!! At least we'll have one good week this year, and beating the Bungles to boot!
