If you're in Broome County or environs, the biggest political event of the year is today: John Orzel is officially launching his campaign for the New York State Senate. This will apparently involve a number of events around the 52nd state senate district, ending with a rally and cookout in Scenic Whitney Point:
"What does it take," you're thinking, "to obtain the highly exclusive-- rarely granted and even more rarely sought-- Uncertain Principles endorsement?"
Well, for one thing, he's my uncle. I'm not saying you have to be a blood relative to get my political endorsement, but it helps.
More importantly, the New York state senate is something of a clown show, and Uncle John's opponent, Thomas Libous, has been in charge of putting on makeup and handing out cream pies for quite a while now. Replacing Libous with someone who will act in a responsible manner is in the best interests of the district, and the state as a whole.
So, it's a real no-brainer of a decision. If you're in the 52nd state senate district of New York, I strongly encourage you to vote for him this November. Emmy thinks so, too-- she barks every time Libous drives past Schenectady on the Thruway.

And drink Coca-cola! Not because it's from my company, but because it's such a refreshing beverage!
Now, seriously, after the pepsigate I thought sciblings would be more careful before self-promotional stunts.
geez, what naked shillery.
Lighten up---it's family.
I decided to look on the bright side regarding the first of these, and pretend that it was intended as a joke. The second time, it's a little harder to keep my temper.
Let me just note, though, that if you object to the shillery of giving a positive mention to a family member's political campaign, you should really be incensed by the "buy my book" item in the upper left (which is of direct financial benefit to me). In which case, you should run away immediately and find some other blog to read.
People are actually complaining about some guy and his (highly intelligent) dog saying they endorse his uncle's bid for NYS Senate?
The second one seemed intended more as a joke than the first one, the way I read them.
Good luck to Uncle John, I say.
You missed an easy opportunity to bring out the Dead...
This is outrageous and an affront to democracy. It is disgusting that you would endorse someone just because of family ties. We demand that John Orzel earns your endorsement just like anyone else: by playing a game of basketball with you.
Seriously, though, good luck Uncle John! Can't say I know anything about New York state politics, but if Emmy likes him at least I know he'll be tough on squirrels.
To the naysayers, it doesn't seem like you're familiar with politics in upstate NY. An elected mayor aspiring to higher office, who didn't constantly berate his opponents by calling them pineapple heads and f'heads on local TV is a good thing. But hey, I was from Amsterdam.
I'd rather vote for Steely Kid Orzel - when's she running?
