I'm late. Wampum's opened voting for the 2005 Koufax awards. Aetiology is up for best new blog and best series (more on that after the break). Panda's Thumb is up for best blog community, and many other Sciencebloggers are up in various categories. Hope you've been checking them out over the past several weeks as Wampum relseased the nominations, so now's your chance--go vote! [Edited to add: Janet has a good list of science bloggers nominated, here.] Wampum has up nominations for best series. Aetiology's on there for the series I wrote on pandemic influenza. Their link actually goes…
I've retired my old profile picture, but I thought I'd give you a peek at the larger photo from which it was taken. That's me in biology class, my senior year of high school, doing stuff with slides and an alcohol burner and microorganisms. Some dedicated yearbook photographer took the picture (though it wasn't one of the candids that made it into the yearbook). But high school was a long time ago ... Mad props to Joe Claus, the photographer who took the new profile picture. (Indeed, Joe's skillz are such that the new shot might be about as fair a representation of everyday-me as the old…
So, I keep getting damn spam comments. I'd intentionally left things pretty simple for commenters 'cause I know what a pain it can be to have to register for something different at every blog just to comment, but something's going to have to change. Some options are to do what Ed's done and require TypeKey registration. I could do what Chris has done and moderate all comments, but IMO that's a bad solution for me because I'm so often away from the computer during the night and weekends (and even during the day when I'm in the lab or at meetings). So--what are your preferences? Any other…
It's time for Science Friday again over at DailyKos. Previously, DarkSyde has interviewed Chris Mooney, PZ Myers, Ed Brayton, Wesley Elsberry, the gentlemen over at Real Climate. Obviously he was running out of the big boys*, so today's Science Friday features little ol' me. I'm humbled to be in such esteemed company. (For those of you who've not read many DS posts previously, it's worth checking them out. In addition to his Science Friday gig, he also has a "know your creationists" series that's worthwhile to anyone unfamiliar with the main players--or even those who've followed them…
...Orac's headin' over to Scienceblogs.
I meant to get online yesterday, but hubby had to work all day so it was just me and the kiddos--so we just played all day and I didn't bother to get to a computer. Anyhoo, I've missed a few things. I know this was linked on a few other of my virtual neighbor's websites, but in case you didn't see it, DarkSyde over at DailyKos has an interview with Welsey Elsberry of the NCSE (and a founder of Panda's Thumb). Like Ken Miller, Wesley is a Christian and a staunch defender of keeping nonsense like Intelligent Design out of our classrooms. Second, the Challenger disaster. Seed asked for…
Is that even a verb? I know it's appropriate to say "Slashdotted" and "Farked" and stuff, but I don't think I've ever heard the appropriate term for having a link on boing boing. Anyway, thanks to them for mentioning the Scienceblogs collective on their site, and welcome to folks following their link. Nice to be in the company of sleeved blankets and papercraft sushi. :D (Permalink here--thanks redboat)
As of today, Seed's new science blogs are open for business. (Be sure to check out the list of other bloggers there--it packs quite a punch). To my regular readers, thanks for following me over here, and expect to see pretty much the same things I've written about in the past. Y'know, constant Brangelina pregnancy news, Britney worshipping, and lots of discussion of the latest fashion trends. Yeah. Or, not. (Don't fear--I search of my previous site brings up zero mentions of either Britney Spears, Angelina, or Brad). What you will find is a lot of science, covering mainly medical/…
