Reflection On Frozen Central Park Lake: 01.17.09, 4:19 PM
This image is of the New York City skyline reflected on the ice at Central Park Lake. I was looking south from Bank Rock Bay at the northern end of the lake. The original shot was darker. I adjusted the brightness to achieve this effect.

Satomi's pygmy seahorse, endemic to Indonesia, is one of the world's tiniest seahorses. Two adults would fit head-to-head across the face of a penny and their offspring are each about the size of a 12-point apostrophe.

At under half an inch tall (13 millimeters), Satomi's pygmy seahorse -- named after dive guide Satomi Onishi -- is a strong contender for the world's smallest seahorse. With their tails stretched out straight, two Satomi's…
Reader Sam Tomkinson has been experimenting with my tracing-paper diffusion trick and took this lovely shot of a Myrmecia bull ant in western Australia:
Myrmecia are aggressive ants with a nasty sting, so kudos to Sam for putting his life at risk to bring us a taste of wild Australia.
It also occurs to me to explain that Aussies call the larger Myrmecia species "Bull Ants", and "Red" is used as a modifier. They aren't predators of energy drinks. Although if they were, those teeth could probably open a can.
