I've got a couple of posts that have been nominated for The 2005 Koufax Awards: Best Post, so I've quickly brought them on board here at the new site. Voting isn't yet open, but here they are: Idiot America. This one is something of a howl of anguish, and it's really more a lot of quotes from Charles Pierce's article of the same name in Esquire. If this gets the nomination, credit should go more to Pierce than to me—and that's OK. Planet of the Hats. This article is probably the best representation for how I actually feel about religion. It's all metaphor, but if you don't get it, I won't be…
I gave up on caffeine this past summer—I actually cut it off cold turkey for a good long while. I'm backsliding a bit now, though, just because my early morning teaching schedule has me feeling mostly exhausted all the time (I hope I adjust soon). This new blog, Smelling the Coffee, is not helping. Even the title is driving me nuts. I'll probably pop in to the coffee shop in town this afternoon, but I'll settle for mere decaf.
Until Orac sent me a link, I had no idea there was a Zapatopi weblog—it's going onto the blogroll right now. It's the only weblog out there that I know of that has an octopus as a contributor. Or a Sasquatch.
Everyone sing their birthday wishes to Red State Rabble, who is also optimistically looking forward to an uprising by the moderates of Kansas in the coming year.
Why not me? My father's side of the family was part Dutch, and my daughter's name, Skatje, is apparently a term of endearment over there, so I am eminently qualified. Oh, well. They'd probably all misspell my name with an extra "j", anyway.
This just isn't right. First Ezra Klein subs for Wonkette, and now Glenn Reynolds…why not PZ Myers? Am I too pervy for them? Or was it the lack of wonk?
…for us readers. I can't even imagine how the organizers are coping. The latest category posted is Most Deserving of Wider Recognition, and there are 300 weblogs in there!
Leiter Reports has become a group blog. I hope the new guys have been thoroughly instructed in how to maintain the standards—I don't want to see that uncompromising irascibility diluted! Another new group blog has formed, Minvolved, focusing on Minnesota politics.
Since Thursday, Wiley has been running a series ofstrips mockingbloggers. I'm beginning to feel opressed.
The Koufax Award nominations are beginning to trickle out. The first ones up are the nominations for Best New Blog of 2005, and oh my, but there is a long, long list. You don't get to vote yet, though—they are wisely suggesting that you should take a little time to browse and make an informed selection (which is an excellent idea…one of the pitfalls of these weblog award thingies is that they tend to fall towards all the obvious choices, and "most widely known" is treated as a synonym for "best".) One unfortunate side effect of our recent jump to scienceblogs.com is that a couple of my…
