Religion is like

Religion is like Pornography sez PZ. Indeed, they both leave a nasty aftertaste. No amount of sugar coating can rectify what happens to be a fundamental perversion of the intellect. PZ is taking the offensive one step further. The offensive is necessary when you consider how entrenched religion is in our society and minds.

Go read this at 3 Quarks Daily and come back because I have more. The hand wringing by religious apologists has gotten desperate in the past weeks. Militant atheism is the name given and it is frowned upon. The fundamental reason boils down to what Dawkins has repeatedly pointed out. Religion has…
Sastra here again. We anticipate it. Or, at least, I do. Whenever some lunatic in a not-so-happy place in his life goes into a happy place with a gun and starts to shoot at random human targets, sooner or later someone blames it on atheism. Or links it to atheism. Or compares it to atheism. Or…
After all the chatter that's been going on throughout ScienceBlogs about Matt Nisbet and Chris Mooney's editorial, Framing Science, published in Science on Friday, I almost thought that there was nothing really left for me to say. Of course, regular readers of this blog know that there's rarely an…
Mika Tan is a 30-something biochemistry graduate working in the United States. She also happens to be a successful porn actress. Tan helped me out when I was looking for a security expert to provide some context on an article about hacking luxury cars; since then I've been following her on…

Thanks for that link, which I've just quoted here

It's refreshing to here support for atheism from someone in a society which is commonly regarded by outsiders as being inherently spiritual. Whatever the hell 'spiritual' means.

Although I should say that I picked that analogy specifically because I think we should also be tolerant of pornography, in the same way: it doesn't make you a better person, but if it floats your boat, OK. Let's just make sure the participants aren't abused in any way, and maybe we should help parents keep it away from kids.

Edward (of the first comment): That is funny...India has more than a billion population of a species that also farts (apart from being "inherently spiritual"). Point is, I guess you have met the wrong samples from India... ;)

Just to drive my point, I could put links for some of my blog posts here, that trashes "religion", but then it would become a "shamless plug"... ;)

PZ: I guess it should be the other way... we should keep those parents who indulge in "pornography" away from the children...

It seems a good opportunity to mention the Carvaka and Lokayata, an Indian atheist and materialist movement preceding the classical age of Greece, and lasting at least 2000 years.
