Traveller's manual

Behold this book title: Traveller's Manual for French Persons in Germany and German Persons in France. Such clarity of purpose! This was a French-German phrase book Published in 1799 in France by one Caroline-Stephanie-Felicite Du Crest de Saint-Aubin.

Learnt about this remarkable manual from another more contemporary book I have been reading, The Discovery of France by Graham Robb, a brilliant and engaging exploration of France and Frenchness.

Today is Bastille Day, the French equivalent to our 4th of July, and the crew at In the Agora decided to dedicate the entire day to bashing France. I have very mixed feelings about the whole thing, since there are many things I love about France.
France vs Italy eh, could be good, could be not good... Italy did well to hold off Germany, their defence+goalie look invulnerable. They're good on the counter, but the first goal looked like a defensive error by the Germans, looked like someone missed their assignment.
I'm going to Europe this September for the first time!
