I have written about this once before, but like most good news, one never gets tired of repeating it. In this case, Harry Potter fans will be most pleased to learn that the last Harry Potter book, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, will print a version that will contain a minimum of 30 percent post-consumer waste fiber. In short; this book will be forest-friendly.
Additionally, nearly two-thirds of the 16,700 tons of paper will be approved by the Forest Stewardship Council, an international organization with a mission to "promote environmentally responsible, socially beneficial and economically viable management of the world's forests." Further, a deluxe edition of this Harry Potter book, which will have a first print run of 100,000, will be printed on paper that contains 100 percent post-consumer waste fiber -- the first truly "green" Harry Potter book in America!
Already, the past several editions of the Harry Potter series have been printed on forest-friendly paper in Europe and Canada, according to the wishes of the author, J.K. Rowling.
"The forest at Hogwarts is home to magical creatures like unicorns and centaurs," said Rowling. "Because the Canadian editions are printed on ancient forest-friendly paper, the Harry Potter books are helping to save magnificent forests in the Muggle world, forests that are home of magical animals such as orangutans, wolves and bears. It's a good idea to respect ancient trees, especially if they have a temper like the Whomping Willow."
