This isn't the best video, but it's really interesting because it shows a Meyer's parrot, Poicephalus meyeri, chick in the process of hatching [3:20]

it is fascinating, but I can't help be annoyed that she (and people in general) just get so fascinated by these cute things that we have to involve ourselves in them and participate.
Besides that though, it's a fascinating thing to observe.
Thanks Grrl! Nemo, Che, and I enjoyed this lots!
Regarding the fiddling, I was thinking that guy wasn't too eager to come out and play... would he have made it out eventually, or is this a dubious-viability situation? Of course, there was that initial break in the shell, but we didn't see just how that happened.
i am not sure why the person get her hands into the hatching process, but it is possible that she was worried the chick would get chilled by taking too long to pop out of the egg. further, the chick's parents (especially the mother) often assists hatching, if for no other reason than to consume the eggshell, thereby replenishing her precious calcium.
