String Theory, RHIC, and Furr's Law

An off-hand comment in my RHIC post has provided a lot more traffic and entertainment than I would've thought possible, and has also accidentally re-confirmed what we used to call "Furr's Law" back in my Usenet days-- namely, that the fastest way to get information on the Internet is to say something wrong, and let people rush to correct you. (Please note, I'm not saying I deliberately slighted string theory in order to discover RHIC resources-- I deliberately slighted string theory for the sake of a (not terribly effective) joke.)

Anyway, the responses have provided a wealth of String Theory/ RHIC links, for those inclined and able to read them:

So, there you go. Additions are welcome in the comments. And don't miss your chance to vote in the extremely dorky poll (currently, the fine structure constant is running second to Planck's constant, with the speed of light right up there. And according to one commenter, this will cease to be dorky if another fifteen people vote, so hurry on over...

More like this

It's been a while since I posted anything science-y, and I've got some time between flipping pancakes, so here's an odd thing from the last few weeks of science news. Last week, there was an article in Nature about the wonders of string theory applied to condensed matter physics. This uses the "AdS…
There's a lot of buzz in physics blogdom about the Strings 07 meeting, which starts today in Spain. They currently have a list of speakers, and promise slides and video to come. Also, there's a new paper by Edward Witten on the arxiv, cue sound of heavenly choirs: We consider the problem of…
I didn't write a summary of the third day of "Quantum Boot Camp" to go with my Day One and Day Two summaries for a simple reason: I would've needed to do that on Saturday, and I spent Saturday in transit back to the US. More than that, though, it was harder to summarize than the other two days,…
Rob Knop offers a nice discussion of the speed of light, in response to last night's question. This post is not about that, though you should go read it. This post is about my odd reaction to Rob's title: "'Speed of Light' : a bad name for a great fundamental constant?" The notion of a "great…

I appreciate that you did the right thing on this. Many others would have dug their heels in and made matters worse.

For a negativistic far left-wing activist anti-Bush anti-capitalist anti-American anti-religious pseudoscientist, I'm not a bad guy...

Indeed, aren't we all?

(just a badge of honor, though I must say you are accumulating those quite rapidally recently...)
