Japan Nuclear Disaster Update 31: Radioactive stuff spreads, questions multiply
The International Atomic Energy Association issued its last report on Fukushima on June 2nd and appears to not be keeping their web site up to date any more. This is the last time I'll be checking with them unless I hear otherwise. The email scandal reported last time continues "Analysts say the scandal reflects panic in Japan's atomic power industry, long coddled by political, corporate and regulatory interests dubbed the "nuclear village" but now facing growing anti-nuclear sentiment as workers battle to end the Fukushima crisis.? (from Ana's Feed, below). The magnitude of the tsunami…
Whispers from the Ghosting Trees
Whispers from the Ghosting Trees A guest post by Gail Zawacki, who blogs at Wit's End. While we hustle busily through the necessities of our lives, wrapped up in our daily preoccupations - our obligations to our families, our jobs, and our dreams - at the same time all around the world, trees are silently expiring. For those who take the time to look, we can see that the forests are being transformed before our helpless and incredulous gaze into spectral mausoleums, as even the most ancient living wood is consumed by a raging tsunami of pathogens unprecedented in scale and virulence. What has…

Japan Nuclear Disaster Update # 40: Fukushima Plant Still Producing Energy! (In a bad way)
The Fukushima nuclear power plant was opened to journalists for the first time; See below for numerous links to related stories. There appears to be very high levels of radiation at Fukushima plant reactor #3, and at either reactors 1 and 3, or both, nuclear fission may have been occurring in the melted down remains. Ideally, once a plant is turned off, i.e., control rods inserted etc. etc., the state of "criticality" is stopped and there is no more fission, or at least, only a small background level. But, if a nuclear power plant's core melts down, nuclear material can re-accumulate in…

John Mashey on how to learn about science
Another post on John Mashey's virtual blog. Everything that follows is from comments posted here by Mashey, lightly edited. This long essay grew from a dialog in this thread into something that may be a more general resource than just some answers to Mr Manny. There are 3 parts so far: Part 1 Motivation & Approach to Science Part 2 Relevant Personal Background Part 3 Answers to Questions, Sources Part 1 Motivation & Approach to Science 1.1 Why This? I'm always curious when people with decent-or-better educational backgrounds strongly espouse conclusions directly opposite that of…

Kevin in China, part 6 - The Mystery Snake
Kevin went to another place and kept catching a snake he cannot identify. Read more under the fold.... Pinqian Report (pin - tchin) The Pinqian trip is a fairly short and concise trip. The trip guest starred Vanessa Reynolds for about half the time. Prior to this trip, her China experience had been the mega-cities (and Muyu). I was very pleased later in the trip when I had asked her about the time spent in Pinqian and she said it had been the highlight of her China experience. I am the opposite, I have not really spent any time in the mega-cities except for a few days in Beijing, and I did…

Nim
As an introduction to a mathematical game, and how you can use a little bit of math to form a description of the game that allows you to determine the optimal strategy, I'm going to talk a bit about Nim. Nim is a simple two-player turn-taking game. The idea is you've got a collection of piles of rocks. The standard terminology calls each pile a heap. Each turn, a player can take any number of rocks from any single heap. In classic Nim, whoever takes the last rock loses. But we're going to start with an easier to analyze variant, where whoever takes the last rock wins. Let's look at an…
