Shifting Milk

For unknown reasons, I found myself reading a USA Today from last Wednesday (Sept. 5). In it, there is a nice little article that reports on the decline in milk deliveries. The reporter 'frames' the story in a positive light: milk deliveries have not declined any further since 2001--they've stabilized at a paltry 0.4% of the U.S. milk market. Anecdotal evidence suggests milk deliveries might even be increasing. But at less than one percent of market share, it seems silly not to reminisce. Back in 1963, milk deliveries accounted for nearly one-third of the milk we drank.

Milk delivery is still done almost exclusively by men but, given the decline in deliveries, I assume there has been an equal decline in indiscretions by the proverbial milkman (and fewer illegitimate children).

Late last year as many Americans purchased affordable health insurance for the first time, others opened their mailboxes to find notification that their coverage had been cancelled. The story erupted across media channels, as President Obama had promised that people could keep their plans, but the…
Over at Inside Higher Ed, they've posted a report on the job market in history, which finds that there are more jobs than new Ph.D.'s, but that American and European history are overrepresented in the candidate pool, relative to the number of jobs. It also includes this comment about the number of…
Part of debating, of course, is knowing your opponent. In the case of Ron Bailey, I've appeared at three separate events with him in the past, so we do know each other's arguments fairly well. Still, I've done a little background research now that we're going to be going head-on (we've been more…

Earlier, kids resembled the milkman or the iceman. With electrically powered refrigerators, the iceman got sidelined. Now that the milkman is all but gone, will kids resemble the cable guy?
