Long timers here may recall that I mentioned this cool video by Nina Paley called Sita Sings the Blues several years ago. At that time, all that was available were some short but very pretty clips. Good news! Sita Sings the Blues is done, and available on the web. It's Saturday evening — go ahead, set aside an hour and a half to watch it. How often do you run across Hindu myths animated and set to the 1920's jazz? Speaking of Hindu myths, have you ever read any of their creation stories? Here's one version: Before time began there was no heaven, no earth and no space between. A vast dark…
Jim Kakalios says the new Watchmen movie is going to be good…and we can trust Jim.
No, my work is not yet done, and my deadlines haven't yet been met, but I'm confident that I'll reach my goals by this afternoon. Bear with me with patience, please. Until this afternoon, when I slap these puppies and ship them off to their destinations, I'll leave you with something to discuss among yourselves: the movies! Last night was Oscar night, and I had the awards yammering in the background while I was pounding the keys. I have to get out more; I've seen virtually none of the nominated movies this year. There's something called "Slumdog Millionaire" that's getting a lot of buzz?…
You may have heard that there is a new movie about Darwin in the works, Creation, starring Paul Bettany and Jennifer Connelly. We have a synopsis now, and it isn't good news. The Darwin we meet in CREATION is a young, vibrant father, husband and friend whose mental and physical health gradually buckles under the weight of guilt and grief for a lost child. Ultimately it is the ghost of Annie, his adored 10 year-old daughter who leads him out of darkness and helps him reconnect with his wife and family. Only then is he able to create the book that changed the world. They've got to be kidding.…
If Bill O'Reilly ever gets a Christmas special, he'll need an opening musical number…
Dance, everyone!
We need more monkey music.
I thought Expelled was an awful concept, but now there's another movie that's come out that is even worse: The Day the Earth Stood Still. I haven't seen it, and I don't plan to, since I was horrified by the trailers … and now Gary Farber has collected the key points of many reviews. There ought to be a law that no remakes can be released that are worse than the originals, just to discourage this kind of abomination. The original movie was a wonderful SF classic. I've got it on DVD here, and I think just to spite the hacks who ripped it off, I'm going to watch Michael Rennie and Patricia Neal…

For some reason, the holidays turns many people's thoughts to the contemplation of food. So, as requested elsewhere, here's an open thread to share recipes, salivate over great meals, or just chat about what's on the stove right now.
I'm not a fan of Toby Keith at all, but I'll make an exception for this one time. */ The Colbert ReportMon - Thurs 11:30pm / 10:30c A Colbert Christmas: Toby Keith Sings Colbert at ChristmasColbert Christmas DVD Green ScreenBill O'Reilly Interview
It's late (at least, where I am it is). Looking for something to while away the hours? How about making paper models of Einstein, Sagan, and Darwin? Or maybe you'd prefer stitching up a nice squid hat.
Everybody is sending me links to this game, Night of the Cephalopods. Nice title, but I'm sorry, it's Windows only, so no way will I ever sully my gaming muscles to play it.
Finnish Lawn Ornaments. Chilean Flamingos, Phoenicopterus chilensis, Korkeasaari (Helsinki Zoo). Image: GrrlScientist, 20 November 2008 [larger view]. What have I done and seen so far in Helsinki? So far, I've; visited the Korkeasaari (Helsinki Zoo), where, among other things, I watched endangered Przewalski's horses actively working at increasing their tiny population -- and no, I did not photograph that, but it sure was tempting! met some of my host's friends over beers .. many many beers ... had beers on the SS Hyöky, oddest quaintest little boat-bar/museum I've ever visited (yes…
How about Playing Gods: The Board Game of Divine Domination? It's called a "satirical board game of religious warfare", and sounds like good silly fun. Some people, though, don't like to see their dogma mocked. [The game] has no basis in historical reality and doesn't actually represent any religion. It just appeals to people who hate religion to begin with -- the hip subculture of militant popular atheists. These people are fanatics, for the most part, themselves. Their thinking is rigid and hostile and not much different from jihadists who don't use their minds or study what they are…

No way am I going to get sucked into this little physics-based game, Assembler. I know a black hole of time when I see one.
All violence in this video is intended entirely metaphorically.
You may all recall that a certain bad movie was released in mid-April…a movie which I have not yet seen, but which is now available on DVD. I was just at the local gas station/grocery store/video store, and there it was, available right there on the shelf. I considered it for a few minutes, and then, since I was paying for gas anyway, I tossed it on the counter and brought it home. Yeah, I know, I wasted $2.12, but it's about time I got it over with. I'm about to sit down and watch it. I figure one way I can recoup my investment is by live-blogging it. Here's the trailer. That's right, it's…
