Whooping cough appears to be back, with a vengeance. It is now an epidemic in California. You need to know that it is serious business.
Is the future of the science blogging blogosphere gong to look like the Early Triassic (which followed a mass extinction event)? Bora seems to think so: Science Blogging Networks: What, Why and How Reversal of hyperglycemia in diabetic mouse models using induced-pluripotent stem (iPS)-derived pancreatic β-like cells ... say no more. Just read all about it here. Dengue fever in florida: What's the story?
It was already stifling at 9 o'clock in the morning as I frantically took notes on what I was witnessing through my field glasses. Without warning a black, hairy arm reached out to smack an unsuspecting victim, immediately giving way to a frantic chase that roused the entire troop. With teeth bared, the large, muscular ape bared down on his assailant amidst high-pitched screams of excitement before a resounding smack reverberated beneath the canopy and signaled ... ... that it is time for you to CLICK HERE to read this fascinating post that bears on issues of Primate Psychology, Animal Rights…

As much as I abhor war, the way that the military handles soldier deaths is (usually) quite admirable (although the same might not hold for its handling of post-service medical problems). When a soldier is killed in service, the family gets a personal visit and often one or more personal phone calls from higher officers, congressmen, or even the President. Earlier today I heard an interview on our local NPR interview show with the father of an engineer who was killed in the Deepwater Horizon explosion. He said that BP had not spoken to him nor contacted him or his family in any way since…
Note: On the Intertubes, he word "strike" and "scienceblogs" now occurs randomly in relation to topic at hand rather than in connection with Pepsico. Such as "Lightning Strike" and "Hunger Strike" and "doesn't strike me as shocking" Note: When you are a single parent, it's pretty much baby OR blogging. I've been a single parent for several days, but getting back to the whole "village raises the child" thing shortly.
We just spent two days at French Frigate Shoals, most of which I spent diving or sleeping. Our research is going very well, which keeps me pretty busy, but I still find time to snap a picture or two. Here are some shots of the cruise so far!
Everybody should do this: Dear Target, What's $2183.70 to a big company like you, beloved by millions of shoppers throughout the land, with sales of $63.4 billion during 2009? Not much, but it's what my little family of three spent at your stores in 2009 and 2010, up to now. I know you don't need me anymore. After all, your 2009 results "reflect the strongest retail segment profit in [your] history". It's been grand, or, dare I say "Super", but I think it's time we see other people.... ... Like the headline says. I've been thinking about setting up a schwag shoppe, and so I'm going to need a logo. So I'm turning to you, my brilliant readers who (I hope) are far more photoshop-proficient than I am. Though I did make my own banner in photoshop, which I think is pretty awesome, if I may toot my own horn. (Of course I can toot my own horn, its my blog!) So anyway, who wants to make me a logo? If you've been reading my blog, you know the kinds of things I write about. If I pick your design, you will receive glowing praise from me in blog and twitter form, as well as a free item…

This is a tamarind: The fruit pulp is edible and popular. The hard green pulp of a young fruit is considered by many to be too sour and acidic, but is often used as a component of savory dishes, as a pickling agent or as a means of making certain poisonous yams in Ghana safe for human consumption. The ripened fruit is considered the more palatable as it becomes sweeter and less sour (acidic) as it matures. It is used in desserts as a jam, blended into juices or sweetened drinks, sorbets, ice-creams and all manner of snack. It is also consumed as a natural laxative. (via wikipedia) This is a…

We spent the past day at Nihoa. Even from afar, its jagged shape seems somewhat ominous. It blows my mind to think that people used to live on this island! There seems to be no source of fresh water, and the only source of food is the blue depths off shore, which are patrolled by territorial beasts which may attack at any time. After my experiences yesterday, I have to admit that I am afraid of them - which I had never been before. I had always thought that as long as you don't bug them, they won't bug you, and they're no real threat. But yesterday, I was scared, and I seriously worried that…
Well, Auburn, actually. I'm visiting family this week and mainly holing up in my mother's house to type. She doesn't have an Internet connection, and no nearby wireless. It's like moving into the backwoods, so I'm going to be a bit throttled for a while. But I shall get much done! I'm entering this brief note on my iPad 3G, which I've found to be bit flaky with MovableType. This may manifest itself as a blank entry, in which case I'll be very frustrated and you won't even know it. At least the sun is shining and there are mountains and trees and oceans around here, even if this Internet…

The whole Pepsi maneno is over, and we are moving on. But I thought you'd like to see this site just because it is so unbelievably ugly. Be careful. The first time I opened this web page up on one of those old fashioned CRT monitors, the glass broke.
