One of the shocking revelations of the Swifthacking of CRU one year ago (aka Climategate) was the fact that scientists can be downright nasty. Contrary to all previous indications, scientists are not always shy, reserved and polite, prefering the inside of a lab to any possibility of confrontation. On the heels of the discovery of this new phenomenom comes a fresh bit of research from the icey confines of Antarctic research facilities. After three long months of studying ice core samples in the Antarctic, a multidisciplinary climate research team presented startling evidence showing that all…
Okay, "A Team" was a little to simple, and it was taken. Instead I would like to inform readers of the "CSRR" Team, or CSRRT. I will let the press release speak for itself: NAME: Climate Science Rapid Response Team (CSRRT) WEBSITE: www.climaterapidresponse.org WHO & WHAT: The CSSRT is a match-making service between top scientists and members of the media and office holders and their staffs from various levels of government. Our group consists of dozens of leading scientists who wish to improve communication about climate change. The…

Real science is about the gathering of multiple lines of evidence, bulding on previous research that built on research before that. One of the hallmarks of denialism is choosing a single study or dataset out of a multitude simply because it is an outlier that confirms their prefered viewpoint. On the "It's the sun, stupid" thread, mandas has provided a very nice listing of some of the many different examinations of solar forcing on recent climate change. As with all robust scientific findings, the methods and datasets are different but the general conclusions are all the same: solar forcing…
November 17 marked the one year anniversary of the hacking of CRU mail servers and the release of thousands of emails between climate scientists. Though irrelevant to the scientific case for anthropogenic climate change, the event was significant in the public relations sphere. I have not found the time to do a proper memorial write up though I think it is important to reassess and reframe the controversy with the benefit of hindsight. But as luck would have it, a young climate blogger named Kate at Climate Sight has written a piece as well laid out and written as I could ever have hoped to…
I don't like Prince Charles much, but that is just because of all the gossip the world was exposed to when Lady Di still walked this earth, so I can hardly be sure if he deserves that feeling. So what? Well, it seems Charles is very into eco-friendly sustainability and all that dirty hippy stuff. I was offered a free copy of his new book "Harmony." Below is an exerpt from HarmonyTheMovie.com Harmony Movie Trailer from Balcony Films on Vimeo. Does anyone know anything about it? Should I get a copy for review?

More entertaining than informative, greenman's latest Crock of the Week surveys the history of climate change in the movies! Gotta dust off those old Mad Max VHS tapes again...
A great and substantive post up at Skeptical Science on La Nina and what we should expect (and not expect) in terms of its impact on global temperatures. Read it all! (image borrowed from Skeptical Science) La Ninas typically redistribute the global heat budget in such a way as average surface temperatures are depressed from where they might otherwise have been, and we are several months into a strong one now. (image borrowed from Skeptical Science) Be on the lookout for lots more "global warming stopped!" bull.
Another good video from greenman: It is very discouragin to hear a 60 year old science program explaning exactly the same basics of climate change that Inhofe and half the new republican congress claim today is an IPCC hoax.

[Update: I am closing this thread as it is now over 500 comments long. However, because the discussion is still ongoing it will continue on this post. There is also the possibility of Chris S coming back with his own analysis of Richard's data. This is a quick summary of what we can conclude thus far. Richard thinks he is a sceptic. I am sorry to say that he is not. A sceptic considers all available material and evaluates evidence objectively. We know Richard does not do this because he has several times cited material that he admits himself he has not read. A sceptic will consider all…
This comment may explain alot a lot about how Judith Curry is able to publish demonstrable tripe and completely brush off all substantive criticism: "If what i said was utter nonsense, why is anyone here talking about it, I have 440 comments in 24 hours." It leaves me speechless. On the other hand, it may explain why she thinks WattsUpWithThat and Climate Audit are quality sources of climate science.
This Youtube is long, but it is very well done, and frankly hilarious. Many of our favorite denier memes would fit in very comfortably as well. Of course, after the laughing stops, the congressional hearings will begin.
Judith Curry has become quite a blog sensation, and did so long before starting her own. I have expressed my frustration with her in the past for a seemingly reckless affinity for "hit and run" postings. I will appreciatively grant that she comments alot, and engages many conversants extensively, but she has posted many very inflammatory or technically flawed diatribes in the past, the kind sorely needing defending or ammending, and left the clear and substantive rebuttals unanswered or inadequately answered. Frequently interested readers were left with only vague promises of "more on that…
Really great essay here, by Stephan Lewandowsky, on scientific uncertainty and manufacturing doubt.
In the spirit of letting things speak for themselves, I just wanted to juxtapose two recent stories I came across, each about conspiratorial meetings you are supposed to find significant. Story number one involves billionaires from finance, oil and coal and health care industries: Koch Brothers Convened Right-Wing Meeting in June New details have emerged on the right-wing groups spending tens of millions of dollars to influence the upcoming midterm elections. The website ThinkProgress reports the billionaire brothers David and Charles Koch held a secretive meeting with influential right-…

Like rumours of Mark Twain's death, the claims of the disappearance of BP's oil spill have been greatly exagerated. From the Times-Picyune of New Orleans. Additional photos here. These pictures are only a few days old. Watch/Listen/Read this interview from DemocracyNow! as well: we hear that five million barrels of oil were released from the Macondo well. We know that [ 362] miles were oiled in four states, 400 species of animals threatened from this, 400 controlled burns that killed hundreds of sea turtles and untold numbers of dolphins and sea mammals. We're told that it's over, that…
