Auf wiedersehen
Tomorrow, I get to spend a very long day traveling to the Lindau Meetings, which will be great fun, and you can expect some science blogging from that event (Bora will also be attending, so Scienceblogs has you covered). However, I am seeing some troublesome stirrings here. A certain demented ex-commenter is morphing to avoid his banning, we've just had a flood of weird spam (a dental office using spam tools? Tsk, tsk), and I just know my ability to police the site is going to be hampered by meetings…or good Bavarian beer. So just be warned: I may have to turn user registration on again. I…
Upcoming SICB Meeting
I have been invited to be a panelist at the Society of Integrative and Comparative Biology (SICB) meeting, which is one of the largest biology meetings in North America. It is being held from 3-7 January 2007 in Phoenix, Arizona. This panel will discuss blogs: how to set them up, how to decide what to write about, how to use them for education, public outreach and research purposes. The panel consists of PZ, John and myself -- even though I have been outed several times in the past, this means that my anonymity is officially over at this point, so I guess I'll be unemployed for the rest of my…
The State of Science 2006
I think that my 2006 was the worst year of my entire life, and believe me, I've had several poor years prior to this one, but I am not the only one having a bad time: it appears that science in general has been having a rough time as well; Astronomers feuded about calling Pluto a planet. Ornithologists clashed over whether a magnificent woodpecker really did come back from extinction. A top scientific journal made a red-faced retraction over fraudulent claims about stem cells. And the nation's top food and drug regulator ended up in court, admitting he owned stocks in businesses his agency…
ExxonMobile Gets Another Break on Valdez Spill Penalty
How much do you want to bet that the employees won't be getting any of this savings in their Christmas stockings this year? A federal judge has given petroleum giant ExxonMobil a break on its pay out for the Valdez spill, according to a breaking report from the Associated Press. The news agency is currently reporting that a federal appeals court halved the $5 billion awarded by a jury to Alaskans and other parties to deal with the consequences of the spill. The spill dumped tens of millions of gallons of oil in the Prince William Sound, which spread all over Alaska's coastline. In the third…
Government-Censored Science
Apparently, facts are getting in the way of BushCo. But does everything need to be cleared by the faith-based intitiatives office? The Bush administration is clamping down on scientists at the U.S. Geological Survey, the latest agency subjected to controls on research that might go against official policy. New rules require screening of all facts and interpretations by agency scientists who study everything from caribou mating to global warming. The rules apply to all scientific papers and other public documents, even minor reports or prepared talks, according to documents obtained by The…
Clarity of Vision
Clarity of Vision Orphaned image. Please contact me for proper attribution and linkage. A friend, Diane, noted from my SEED interview that I enjoy sailing. So she then found this stunning image to share with all of you. When I first saw it, it took my breath away, and put tears into my eyes. Can't you just feel the salty water and warm sun on your grateful skin? Even though this boat appears to be levitating, it is actually floating on very clear, transparent tropical waters. I am not sure of its exact location, but I prefer to imagine that this boat is located in the south Pacific Ocean…
Pallid Bat
Pallid Bat, Antrozous pallidous, Big Bend National Park, summer 2006. The photographer writes that she is a research assistant in the mammalogy department at Auburn University and that she took this picture while carrying out biodiversity studies at Big Bend National Park. In the photographer's opinion, the pallid bat is among the most beautiful of all bat species. Image: Anne-Marie. I am receiving so many gorgeous pictures from you, dear readers, that I am overwhelmed by the beauty of the images and the creatures and places in them. If you have a high-resolution digitized nature image (…
Update
I know that there are three or four of you, dear readers, who have been eagerly awaiting my release from the hospital -- although none more eagerly than me! My release day was supposed to be tomorrow, but alas, it has been postponed once again, but this time, it was postponed indefinitely. When I asked my doctor if I would be out of the hospital by Thanksgiving, he told me no, that was not going to happen. Needless to say, I am very disappointed, so much so that I've not been posting much to my blog. At this point, the best I can hope for is to be released by December -- hopefully early…
The Day After the Perfect Shitstorm ..
I can see clearly now, the rain is gone, I can see all Rethuglicans in my way Gone are the dark clouds that had me blind It's gonna be a bright (bright), bright (bright) Sun-Shiny day. I think I can make it now, the 'thugs are gone All of the bad feelings have disappeared Here is the rainbow I've been votin' for It's gonna be a bright (bright), bright (bright) Sun-Shiny day. Look all around, there's nothin' but blue skies Look straight ahead, nothin' but blue skies I can see clearly now, the 'thugs are gone, I can see all rethuglicans in my way Gone are the dark clouds that had me blind It'…
NYC Grrl Invades Texas
Can you find the bar-tailed godwits here among the avocet and marbled godwits? Image: Mary Scott, Birding America. Thanks to a reader who would rather remain anonymous, I am going to go to Texas tomorrow and will return to all of you on Tuesday. I have scheduled a few things to publish on this blog while I am gone so you don't feel abandoned, and I will be peeking in at night and perhaps publishing a few things for you to read or a few pictures for you to look at during those times. I return from Texas on Sunday night, and will be writing a little bit for you on Monday, but since The Bird…

Warner Bros Brain Fart Delays Sixth Harry Potter Film
tags: Harry Potter news, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, poster teasers The sixth Harry Potter film, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, was supposed to be released 21 November 2008, but Warner Brothers film studios announced yesterday that the film's release has been delayed until 17 July 2009, due to a corporate brain fart. Despite this disappointing news, the winning movie poster was chosen by my readers anyway (see above). Poster number one was the overwhelming favorite, as you can see from the final poll results; Meanwhile in other news, millionaire teenaged actress…
Manhattan Sunset
Manhattan Sunset, 2001. Click here for larger image in its own window. Image: Neil deGrasse Tyson/AMNH. Tonight at 820pm EST, Manhattan will be flooded with sunlight because the sun will set precisely on the centerline of every street. The skyscrapers that line Manhattan streets usually hide the setting sun, casting the streets into shadows before sunset. If Manhattan's road grid was perfectly aligned east to west, today's effect would instead occur on the Vernal and Autumnal Equinoxes, March 21 and September 21, which are the only two days when the sun rises and sets directly in the east…
More clues to God's identity!
One of those right-wing circle-jerks has been going on in Virginia, and the wingnuts are vying to see who can be holiest — it looks like a contest between Newt Gingrich and Mike Huckabee. It's boring, except, I think, for the revelation about the nature of God. Huckabee was not to be outdone in the use of hyperbole. The former Republican presidential candidate called the United States a "blessed" nation whose victory against the British in the Revolutionary War was "a miracle from God's hand," indeed the same type of miracle that defeated the legalization of gay marriage in California. Since…

Taciturnity
I found this wonderful word (below) in a book by the amazing and incomparable Virginia Woolf, entitled Mrs. Dalloway. Taciturnity (tas-i-TUR-ni-tee) [Latin taciturnitÄs; from tacitus, silent.] n. the state or quality of being reserved or reticent in conversation. Scots Law. the relinquishing of a legal right through an unduly long delay, as by the silence of the creditor. Usage: Odd it was, as Miss Kilman stood there (and stand she did, with the power and taciturnity of some prehistoric monster amoured for primeval warfare) how, second by second, the idea of her diminished, how…
Scientists, neuter yourselves!
Chad reports a not-so-subtle message from a science conference: The annoying thing was the peripheral message-- she took pains to state several times that both Democrats and Republicans in Congress support science, in a tone that basically came across as chiding us for thinking otherwise. That was annoying by itself, but at the very end of the talk, she specifically warned against taking partisan positions, citing the letter supporting John Kerry that was signed by a couple dozen Nobel laureates as something that made it harder to keep science funding. She said that after that, when she met…
Identical Quadruplets
There are fewer than 100 identical quadruplets in the world. A 26-year-old Indian woman has given birth to rare identical quadruplets and the girls are healthy after their first six weeks of life, an Indian news agency reported Friday. Shruthi Vivekanandan, a software programmer from the southern city of Madras, delivered Aditi, Aakriti, Akshathi and Aapthi on April 25, Press Trust of India said. I dare you to say their names -- fast -- three times! Just imagine the parents trying to call out to one of them .. The babies were born 10 weeks early and weighed between 1.8 pounds and 2.2…
boy done good
I am happy to report, after a scout of the Wunderpalace, that Tom et al have kept up their social panache despite the move and other life changes. It just figured that I'd be in the Bay Area and there'd be a party at Tom's place... Good crowd, interesting conversation (I did not know synthetic biology had got to such a stage. Must blog.) met the instigator of the Quantum Diaries and some other notables. What I did not expect was the social event stretching out over two days, on the water. Nice breakfast. Nice boat. City looks good from the water. Social life of the scientists can be more…
things you never knew, but should
I have learned many useful things recently: It is harder to organize a birthday party for a dozen munchkins, then it is to organise a four day festival for several thousand people (the previous limit of my organizational reach) Both "Average Angry Professor" and "Angry Average Professor" would be Great Blog Pseudonyms Blog pseudonyms are not reliable for anonymity (but we knew that from Ye Olde Days on the Net) If you want people to read and comment on blogs in large numbers you should say something outrageous about string theory, or cosmology, or religion, or politics, or war, or medicine,…
Radio reminder
Remember—Sunday morning at 9 Central tune in to Atheist Talk radio. This week, August Berkshire has two fundamentalist evangelical Christians on the show, Jeff and Lee from the Twin Cities Christian talk radio station, KKMS. I've dealt with these guys before, so my lip will be curled the entire hour. August will deal with them politely, you can be sure. Hank Fox also tells me that Sunday is National Friendship Day. So what say you all try to get out and meet some new atheist friends? Look up your local godless group and see if they've got any fun events going on, and get to know someone new…
Oh, the Drama.
Matt Nisbet is railing against PZ and the image of the Angry Atheist again. In fairness, PZ would probably choose to comment on this on Matt's turf, rather than linking to it from Pharyngula. But PZ's on vacation, and I'm not inclined to be so noble, especially given the exceedingly smarmy tone of Nisbet's post: For sure, atheists for a long time have been unfairly stereotyped in the mainstream media and in popular culture. But we also have a lot of lousy self-proclaimed spokespeople who do damage to our public image. They're usually angry, grumpy, uncharismatic male loners with a passion…
Arecibo redux?
yo peeps I hear buzz about fateful decisions on NAIC/Arecibo from NSF. But... can't confirm anything. Who knows, and who will tell? PS: thanks to our intrepid commenter and other confirming sources... Cornell did lose their bid. Arecibo is being taken over by "SRI" which is a in consortium of USRA - Universities Space Research Association a venerable and DC institutional consortium, and the University of Puerto Rico. What I hear so far sounds good, I think they will run Arecibo and do it well. SRI appears not to have a web site yet, but they the consortium have started to staff up. (see…
Fuk-D: disaster as art
So, reports are now out that one or more of the Fukushima Daiichi reactors really did meltdown, and TEPCO has come up with a great solution... Told you so (well, ok so reactor 1 also slumped and breached the pressure vessel - hoocoodanode the water gauges were broken...?) Good news is TEPCO now has a plan. A brilliant plan. They are going to tent the reactors!!! Brilliant! But, wait, this sounds familiar This has been done before! Christo and Jeanne-Claude! This is so public spirited of TEPCO in these trying times. Save the world in an aesthetically pleasing manner and sponsoring public…

New Type of Mineral in Historic Meteorite It turns scientists into slavering all devouring monsters "The new mineral was discovered within the meteorite officially designated Yamato 691 enstatite chondrite. Plot Threads
Plot complexity is not, in and of itself, a measure of the quality of a work of communication, but it is surely a measure of something: Frodo Baggins vs Luke Skywalker: This is just awesome - click to embiggen - from XKCD Really big version is here... Hm: the Ents actually sort of show up indirectly in the Shire, so could have a thread going back to there. No Tom Bombadil thread? The darned "Army of the Dead" really does show up out of nowhere as a plot device. Why couldn't Aragon have gone up North to recruit the Dwarves of Iron Hills, Men of Dale and Elves of the Wood, and Beorn and…
I didn't do it!
Although I was actually in Guayaquil the day before brave heroes despoiled another cracker&hellip: In response to criticisms by the nation's Catholic bishops regarding pro-abortion and anti-family language in Ecuador's new proposed Constitution, a group of people entered a chapel in Guayaquil, grabbed the Eucharistic host that was exposed for adoration, tore it apart, spat on it, and stepped on it, according to ACI Prensa. …I was actually a thousand kilometers away on the island of Santa Cruz when the action went down. Clenched fist salute, anyway! Note that the quote is from the crazy…
Using spam to break bad news
I probably shouldn't find this amusing, but... Back a few years ago, a friend of mine worked at a biotech company in Seattle that had large windows looking out onto Puget Sound. They always cheered when the Navy ships came in, 'cause they knew it meant they'd have more work. Tom Joe has a funny post about the same topic, with a different twist. He's not talking about learning your status through any sort of laboratory test. He suggests using e-mail. UPDATE: Since Bora pointed out the PLoS article in the comments, I thought I should add some of the pictures from the article. I love the…
But wait! There's more!
You really don't want to read about another terrifying crazy Republican woman, do you? Too bad. Here it is: a good Christian homeschooling mom who doesn't like gay people. And by "doesn't like", I mean "wants them stoned to death and everything they touch blown up." A friend recently sent me this article about a "gay-friendly" high school. If we were living in a biblical society, homosexuality would be punishable by death so such a school would be unnecessary. Although I'm against the special accommodations, perhaps this new trend of segregation will protect straight kids from these predators…
Something is Rotten in the State of Denmark
Or so says Steen Landsy, director of the Kosmos Center. You see, the Kosmos Center, which in the last 30 years has educated over 6,000 psychics is upset at the proliferation of "psychic educational institutions" in Denmark. There are now 25 such, up from just one a decade ago. The problem, you see, is all these other so-called psychic educational institutions are just a bunch of hacks, and are not guaranteeing the quality of the education provided! There are improperly certified psychics operating throughout Denmark, and the EU, one presumes, given the open borders. What is needed, is…

Friday Fun: New First Year Experience Class: How To Not Be An Asshole
From The Cronk of Higher Education, New First Year Experience Class: How To Not Be An Asshole, this is very funny. The six-week class is comprised of five modules: So You're Drunk: A Guide To Quietly Stumbling Home Street Signs Are Not Dorm Room Decorations Streaking: A Fast-Track To Suspension Noises Neighbors Hate To Hear After 10 pm Nine Reasons the Police Will Handcuff You Current students expressed skepticism about the offering. "I think it's retarded," remarked Marco Miller, a current first year student. "Sometimes, when I'm mad, I just want to pee on a statue or throw bottles at…
Let's all be strident
Salman Rushdie was in Minneapolis last night—I wish I could have been there, but that 3 hour drive can't be taken lightly—and it sounds like he was in excellent form: When asked the question, "Who gets to tell our stories, and who decides who gets to tell them?" Rushdie replied, "Well, you're talking about religion, aren't you? Religion is some people deciding to tell stories for the rest of us, to us." When asked what spiritual practice he used in his writing, if any: "I have no spiritual practice. The word spirituality should be banned from the English language for at least 50 years... Talk…

Let Science Help You Reclaim Four Days of Your Life
tags: science, physics, time-saving techniques, peeling hard-boiled eggs, streaming video We all know that each day is filled with a variety of time-wasting activities that are necessary for us to be able to enjoy those brief, fleeting moments of freedom from such drudgery. So I thought I'd suggest something that you can do to reclaim four days of your life that would otherwise be devoted to the time-wasting activity of peeling hard-boiled eggs -- and this is all due to the wonders of SCIENCE [0:36]. Of course, this looks like so much fun that you'll probably invest those four reclaimed days…
