Today is Easter, for those who celebrate it, and the end of Cadbury Egg season for those who don't. SteelyKid's grandparents and great-grandmother are coming to visit, because it's been weeks since they saw her cuteness in person. And that means minimal blogging today. Religious connotations aside, Easter is one of the cultural signposts of spring. And spring, of course, means the return of twittery birds, and bunnies: They're bunnies in the next yard over, right now, but there will be bunnies. Oh, yes, there will be bunnies. Happy Easter to those who celebrate it. The rest of you, enjoy…

Why is this night different from other nights? Because day care at the Jewish Community Center was closed for Passover, and SteelyKid spent the day at work with Kate, of course. And after a long day of baby lawyering, it's good to relax with a drink: SteelyKid here shows off that she can hold her own bottle, thank you very much. It's not the best Appa-for-scale picture, but new abilities are more important than strict perspective.
SteelyKid is eight months old today, and to celebrate... Kate went down to the City for an oral argument. So, SteelyKid and I had our first night at home without Mommy. Fortunately, there was a basketball game last night, and she slept peacefully on my lap through the whole game. I did cop out a bit when it came time for bed, though. I'm a heavy sleeper as it is, and some of the allergy meds I take make me sleepy at the best of times, so I was worried that I wouldn't hear her in the middle of the night. So, I brought her into our room, and she slept on Kate's part of the big bed. We've been…
While the DVR piles up enough basketball to allow me to fast-forward through CBS's nine-minute commercial breaks, here's this week's Baby Blogging picture: SteelyKid has been in an amazingly good mood this evening, and here you see her obligingly stretching out to her full length so you can see how much she's grown.
SteelyKid's hard at work on tooth number five, and as a result, her nose has been running like a deranged ultramarathoner. Yesterday, it tipped over into a bit of a sinus infection, so there was no way to get a good Baby Blogging picture. She made up for it this morning, though, as Kate snapped a picture of the two of us discussing photo options: As you can see, she's already happier today. We'll keep her home today, and by Monday, she'l be back to being the Empress of the infant room.
SteelyKid turned 30 weeks yesterday, and to celebrate this arbitrary numerical milestone, she shows off what a big strong baby she's become: "Look at me! I can lift a whole bison by myself!"
Because everybody could use some extra baby pictures, a reminder from SteelyKid that a baby's reach should exceed her grasp... ... but not for too long.
For this week's Baby Blogging, SteelyKid shows off the latest look for the baby on the go: In this picture, she's all set to face a busy day at day care. She's in her car seat, with the dangling toys on the handle (Left to right, a rattling snail, a butterfly with crinkly wings, and a flower with a squeaker in it. The difference between baby toys and dog toys is not all that large.). You can also see the fleece car seat cover for cold weather, and her little red dog, for when she's actually in the car, and the handle has to be flipped down out of the way. This carrier car seat will not be…
It's Darwin's 200th birthday today, and SteelyKid is wearing her ladybug outfit to celebrate: If you can't make it out, the outfit is pink, and covered with little pink and orange ladybugs. The feet are larger ladybugs, complete with antennae. Why is this an appropriate Dawrin's Birthday outfit, you ask? Because God is inordinately fond of beetles.
This week's Baby Blogging is in honor of SteelyKid's continued growth: she had her six-month checkup on Wednesday, and has now officially exceeded the weight limit on the bassinet attachment to her porta-crib. We've had to lower her all the way down to the bottom of the crib, where she can look out at the world through a greenish mesh screen: She's very happy about this. Emmy isn't quite sure what to make of it. The other big development of the week is her new bouncy seat: This was purchased last weekend, after seeing her in the jumperoo at day care, bouncing up and down with a huge smile…
SteelyKid is running a bit big for her age-- she'll be six months next weekend, but she's outgrown all her six-month size clothes-- but she's still tiny. At least, I think so, and Kate has the pictures to show why. (I look awfully smug in that picture, mostly because it's only in the last week or two that I've regained the ability to get her to go to sleep while I'm holding her. For weeks and weeks, every time I tried to get her to go to sleep, she'd scream and kick and thrash until I had to give up and either hand her over to Kate, or put her in the sling. That was a serious bummer, so I'm…
Today was a pretty rotten day in a lot of little ways that aren't worth going into. A smiling, happy baby does a lot to make up for that, though: This week's picture was actually taken last night by Kate. The height differential between us accounts for the fact that neither SteelyKid nor Appa are fully in the frame. Still, it's a good illustration of just how darn cute SteelyKid is when she's happy.
Baby Blogging is late this week, because SteelyKid has come down with the cold virus that's going around the JCC day care center. Snotty, crying, coughing babies aren't all that photogenic. I finally got a decent picture of her emerging from her sling after a two-hour nap: It's a little tough to say whether the coughing has gotten better or worse, at this point. Her nose is definitely stuffed up more, though, which made it tough for her to take a bottle. Another fun visit to the pediatrician may be in order...
This week, SteelyKid shows that she takes after her parents: "I like books!" she says. Granted, her liking of books at this stage is not so much about the reading (if you look closely, you can see that she's holding it upside down), and more about the fact that the pages make crinkling noises as she waves them around randomly. But, hey, you have to start somewhere.

As I've already mentioned, I am having a rough time right now, but I love photography, so I decided that I should view NYC through a shutter as a way to deal with my labile mood state. So as I walked down the street, I decided that I would photograph a rather colorful park that was nearby. Even though I've passed by it many times, I've never visited the Anne Loftus playground, so I spontaneously decided to photograph it. I took this…

There are many inexplicable and tragic events in nature, yet few are captured on film. Here is an interesting series of photographs depicting a pair of swallows, Hirundo rustica (known as the Barn Swallow in the United States). In this series of images, we watch the story that unfolds after one of the birds was fatally injured, yet the bird's mate remains nearby, delivering food or water and…
Today is Kate's first day back at work (part-time), so I'm home alone with SteelyKid. This doesn't leave me much time or mental energy for blogging, so here's a bonus baby picture for the week: This one's mostly for the grandparents, who bought her the Halloween outfit. You can't see the jack-o-lantern face on the butt of the pants, and I'm not taking a picture of it because I'd like her to still talk to me when she gets old enough to work a web browser.
Today marks twelve weeks of SteelyKid: I spent pretty much the whole day at work, trying to get stuff done in advance of Kate's return to work tomorrow, which will see me left home alone with SteelyKid all day for the first time. I'm a little apprehensive, to be honest. As for the picture, Kate took it, so if there's any particularly interesting context, I don't know what it might be.
Your weekly picture of SteelyKid with Appa: She's getting big enough that it's starting to be difficult to keep them both in the frame, at least in the porta-crib bassinet thing. I may need to change the way I'm taking these. On the developmental front, Kate reports hearing SteelyKid laugh on several occasions. I still haven't heard it. When I do the Baby Dance with her, she sometimes makes a little coughing sound that I think is the beginning of a laugh, but I have yet to hear real giggling. She's also getting better with her hands. They're not always clenched in fists any more, and she can…
