They're nocturnal. They live in caves. They use ecolocution. BREAKING NEWS: BAT LOOSE IN CONGRESS
Personally I like this video for its production value. Visit msnbc.com for Breaking News, World News, and News about the Economy
As you all probably know by now, we here at Zooillogix do not officially consider a species to exist until it is discovered by Western (or at least Western-trained) scientists. Here are some species that now, officially, exist for the first time. The 3-foot long Bosavi woolly rat is "quite a handsome beast," Kristofer Helgen of the National Museum of Natural History, told National Geographic. It can be found around Mount Bosavi in Papua New Guinea. The Kuranda tree frog speaks in a quick tap, leading researchers to name it the "fast talking frog." It lives in the tropical Queensland,…
If you happen to find yourself in the London area this coming Sunday, stop by the London Zoo for Gay Sunday 2009. They're billing the it as the "most flamboyant event of the year." So, go out and get flaming with the flamingos. Be bearish with the brown bears. Show your pride with the lions. Also, I hear they're having bearded pig BBQ and lowland anoa hamburgers. You're encouraged to eat all the meat related foods you can at the picnic tables set up right in front of the exhibits. Wikipedia has a massive list of animals known to display homosexual behavior. Check it out. For some reason, the…
The following video found below the fold contains explicitly brutal nature footage not suitable for young children or you, Mom. Viewers advised.
Sure you could watch your cat sleeping or your TV while it was turned off, but we here at Zooillogix prefer to stare blankly at this shrew not moving for 1:16 minutes. Thank you Philadelphia Zoo.
Ok, so here's the deal. I love bats. Always have. Always will. In fact, until I was about 14, I wanted to be a bat scientist. I then realized that bat scientists have to take a lot of classes that require a lot of lab work and I hastily changed my goal to becoming a bar owner. I'm not sure when National Geographic first posted this, but it is a pretty sweet interactive website where you can listen to different Panamanian bats' beautiful songs. I'm trying to get one as my ring tone. Can anyone help me do that? My favorite is the black myotis bat and if you help me make that my ring tone, I…
For centuries, the Narwhal was the great mystery of the sea. With the body of a whale and the horn of a Unicorn, many people believed these fascinating creatures were harmless inhabitants of the icy waters of the Arctic Ocean. Recent studies, however, have exposed the secret agenda of these mysterious mammals and the true purpose of their extraordinarily long pointy tusks... Comes with four Magical Tusks and three adorable animals to impale: Penguin, Seal, and Koala Bear. I guess these came out a while back, but they are my Xmas gift of choice for 2009.
We've all seen articles detailing remote controling insects via electric pulse systems on their nervous centers. A paper that we uncovered from last year (thanks NVDH), however, details the beginnings of a new kind of remote controlled moth. Hold on to your hats, because this is about to get complicated. Basically, it all started when aeronautic engineers started looking closely at "insect inspired micro aircraft" as a complement to the large air vehicles that we currently employ. Large vehicles such as planes and helicopters are so massive that they are only minutely affected by changes in…
We here at Zooillogix have been sitting on this story for a while. We were afraid of just how much public outrage it could generate. But since we are morally obligated to bringing our readers the most up-to-date zooillogical news, often regardless of scientific proof, we've decided to go ahead with it. Here it is: The following picture is NOT actually a photo of a golden retriever-human hybrid. That's right. It's a cruel hoax. I know, I know... I was entirely convinced, too. Unfortunately, it's just a part of zartist Patricia Piccinini's exhibition, "We Are Family." Our research team also…
Not to be outdone by Andrew's hard hitting piece about Russian nesting doll zart (zooillogical art), I present to the world: calligraphy zart. The following are works by the French-living, Sudan-borned zartist: Hassan Musa. Thanks to the Sudan Artist Gallery for housing this stuff, as well as other not-too-shabby stuff.
...and American couple John and Steve, who are trying to have a baby themselves, created a truly inspiring tribute video and shared it with Zooillogix. Visit John and Steve Are Having a Baby for more info.
Who, I ask you, is the coolest human being on the planet? Well yesterday (continuing through today and possibly tomorrow) it was Beth F. for sending me this rocking shot glass from the Oakland Zoo. Awesome things in this photo include: Oakland Zoo Shot Glassitude, my thumb, waffle-weave polyester couch. Additionally, I also recently acquired a Honolulu Zoo shot glass. So that brings the collection up to 39! I'll tell you this... whoever supplies me with my 40th zoo or aquarium shot glass will get something really special. I won't divulge exactly what it is, but it will involve glitter and…
We here at Zooillogix do not usually promote the work of other websites unless it is to mock the "guys" over at DeepSeaNews for getting aroused by images of Alvin, the submarine. The fact is that we believe animal readership on the internet is a zero sum game, and we're not about to lose readers to some "nerd" with a thing for taxonomy. We must, however, doff our caps to Arkive, quite possibly the sweetest website on the whole world wide websphere. It has something to do with Sir David Attenborough and the English and blah blah blah. Take a looksy yourself at the 1,000,000+ pics/videos of…
Continuing our long tradition of espousing the virtues of dwarfism and breeding animals as tiny as possible regardless of the health consequences (i.e. adorability!), we bring you a contender for world's smallest horse. This thing should be painted pink or lavender immediately!
A) They're English so they have a bigger vocabulary than the average Nascar obsessed "ravens". B) They can figure out how to do this...*** ***We at Zooillogix are adamant in our belief that humans ARE in fact the only species that use tools in their environments and are not fooled by footage like this. Case closed.
I recently came across the Russian nesting doll art of Irina Troitskaya and thought I would share. Also called matryoshka, matreshka, or "those things are freaking awesome" in Russian, nesting dolls are a traditional artform from the town of Semyonov, where the land was terrible for farming, but the trees were great for nesting dolls. Irina creates her matryoshka on a per order basis only, so get in line! "Queer Fellows" Animals from Russian fairy tales Set of five animals Set of white animals The backs of aforementioned white animals See all her work here or her animal nesting dolls…
